The competition: “Fascination with Automobiles — An Automotive Homage”

In collaboration with students from the Technical University of Dortmund, Department of Art and Graphic Design, under the direction of Prof. Bettina van Haaren, artworks were created that explore visionary ideas, symbolic meanings, and the legendary relationship between humans and automobiles.

The idea for this competition was born at the end of 2013, when a small group of triebwerk friends reflected on how the automobile has always held a firm place in art. The car, more than just a means of transportation, is inextricably linked to a deep emotional appeal — whether it belongs to the driver of an Aston Martin or a humble Twingo. The car as cult object, as work of art.

We began to ask ourselves how today’s generation relates to this topic — a generation in which fewer and fewer young people are obtaining driver’s licenses, not necessarily for financial reasons, but because of the limited space in urban centers. Is the car slowly losing its fascination, shifting its status from a symbol of “freedom and independence” to one of “annoying dependence”?

These reflections ultimately inspired us to launch this art competition.

The students were given two months to explore the topic — and we were truly delighted with the results. Their works reflect a remarkable depth of thought and a genuine enthusiasm for the invention that once gave people the freedom to move.

The award ceremony was held at triebwerk’s premises. The winning artists — Inga Michaelis, Regina de Sousa, and Elisabeth Beregow — each received a prize of EUR 350 for their outstanding works.

A series of postcards has been produced featuring the award-winning pieces. The original artworks, along with additional works from the series, are currently on display at triebwerk.

We would like to thank everyone involved for a wonderful vernissage and are already looking forward to the next triebwerk event.
